Anna and the French Kiss

Anna and the French Kiss - Stephanie Perkins Okay, really. How can you read this novel and not fall in love with everything about it? Everyone is reading it, everyone loves it. I can't think of another contemporary YA book with such widespread and practically unanimous support. And it is so well deserved! It is such a quiet and sweet story, it kinda snuck up on me. I fell in love with the book a little at a time, just like Anna and St. Clair. So, instead of doing a traditional review, I'm making a list of five of the reasons that - in my opinion - this book stands out. Instead of stating the obvious facts about the general plot and characters being incredible, I'm focusing on the details that made the story.1. Anna's dad. A tribute to the ridiculousness of Nicholas Sparks. How AWESOME is that? Really. I have never wanted to give someone a high five as much as I want to give one to Stephanie. I often get great joy out of making fun of the guy, and was thrilled that it was a part of this story. 2. Bananas, elephants, bridges, sandwiches, and Star Wars. The little things don't necessarily matter plot-wise. But: they're what make characters real people, and what make a book a story.3. St. Clair's fear of heights, Anna's OCD and their mutual inability to face change. We don't need our characters to be perfect, we want them to be real. 4. John Green. He said this on Twitter (to Maureen Johnson): "have you read ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS? It's like you and me and Sarah Dessen had a really sexy baby." 5. Mum, goinky, bloody, trousers. Deny it if you wish, but accents are hot. St. Clair didn't need one to melt readers of the book...but it certainly doesn't hurt. So, if you haven't read this book yet - do yourself a favor and pick it up. Make sure and savor the details, they're what really make this book shine!
